Explosion dynamics is a broad field of applied research based on applying the principles of thermodynamics, chemical reaction kinetics, fluid and solid mechanics to studying accidental and deliberate explosions. Research in this field and related areas such as propulsion has been carried out at Caltech since 1993 in Joe Shepherd’s Explosion Dynamics Laboratory. Our research activities can be broadly divided into three areas:
